Club legend Darren Ambrose is well versed in all things Crystal Palace. Having represented the now-Premier League side 124 times over three seasons and played a crucial role in some of their most iconic moments, the former midfielder has a close affinity with the south Londoners.
Since retiring, Ambrose has grown even closer to the club he earned Goal of the Season awards in three consecutive campaigns at, becoming a popular matchday host in Selhurst Park’s Premium lounges and writing his own column in the matchday programme.
This week, reflecting on the 30-year anniversary of Crystal Palace’s first major trophy – the Zenith Data Systems Cup in 1991 – Ambrose reveals how working with Premium guests has opened his eyes to even more on the club.
He said: “I wasn’t too familiar with the history of that tournament until I joined the hospitality side at Crystal Palace. I’ve got my matchday partner, Jane, and we do a lot of tours around the stadium. We always end up at the trophy cabinet. It’s not the biggest, of course, but the ZDS trophy is always a talking point. I learned a lot about it through Jane, I learned about the cup and that we won 4-1 after extra time.
“She always makes the point at the end about Neville Southall refusing to pick up his winners’ medal – from then on, she says, every time he came to Selhurst the song was: ‘Neville, Neville, give us a sulk!’ So I have learned from the tours about it. It’s an interesting one.”
Ambrose goes on to explain that not winning a major trophy at senior level is one of his biggest career regrets, saying: “It’s probably the one thing I look back at my career and wish I had done. I won a few individual trophies, a few Young Player of the Seasons, Player of the Seasons and have Goal of the Seasons coming out of my ears, but I didn’t ever win a first-team trophy.”
As warmly received in the lounges as he was from the stands, Darren has endless stories and insight from his time at Palace and beyond. You can hear it all first-hand by registering your interest in our exclusive Premium experiences below.
